Senator David Van was giving a speech about that and the weaponisation and making criticisms of what had gone on. These are all of the things that led up to this moment. Gallagher and had even, potentially, sent her a transcript of the project interview before it went to air. But from the leaked text messages where it was revealed that Mr. And that's why Katy Gallagher has been accused of misleading parliament, because basically she said, How dare you? No one had any knowledge. Samantha Maiden: So, she was clearly suggesting we didn't have any knowledge of that. Katy Gallagher: “no one had any knowledge. Linda Reynolds: “…about what you were intending to do with the story. And in that moment, Linda Reynolds confronted those women and she said, “I know where this started”… and Katy Gallagher said, “How dare you? No one had any knowledge.” Higgins and Penny Wong and Katy Gallagher. Now, why is this important? It's important because there was a clash in Senate estimates in June of 2021 between Linda Reynolds, the former defence minister and former employer of Ms. So, Senator Katy Gallagher has been under fire for almost two weeks, following the emergence in these text messages of evidence that she was tipped off before the story broke. Can you just give us the context of how and why the fresh allegations came out? And what they knew and when they knew it.ĭavid Lipson: Indeed, it was a debate about those text messages that prompted the new and explosive claims from Senator Thorp. All of these things have come into the public domain, and that has triggered a debate about the Labor Party and whether or not they weaponised this argument or whether or not they weaponised the allegation. Samantha Maiden: We've had the emergence of audiotapes that Channel Ten provided under subpoena. News grab: “…Text messages between Brittany Higgins and her partner David Shiraz show how the pair attempted to gain the support of senior Labor figures as they pursued her rape allegation.” And of course, we've also had a defamation case commence and now we find ourselves in this situation where there has been the wholesale leaking of Ms. Now, we find ourselves in a situation where there has been an inquiry, at a Canberra level, into claims that the police sided with the defence in the matter - considering the conduct of the DPP and police and also the victims of Crime Commissioner Heidi Yates, who supported Brittany Higgins through that process. Senator Van insists he's done nothing wrong.ĭavid Van: There should be and must be an investigation into these outrageous claims so they can be proved to be false.ĭavid Lipson: It's all come in the midst of further claims and counterclaims about who knew what when regarding the allegation from Brittany Higgins that she was raped in a minister's office in 2021. And to have him talking about this today is an absolute disgrace.ĭavid Lipson: The Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has removed Senator Van from the Liberal Party room and is now urging him to quit Parliament. (Senator Thorpe) and the prime Minister had to remove him from his office. Lidia Thorpe: This person, (Senator Thorpe, I would just warn, trust me, at this point) sexually assaulted me…. In a heated exchange, Lidia Thorpe, an independent senator, used parliamentary privilege to point the finger at Senator David Van. The issue of how women are treated in federal parliament has exploded again with new allegations of sexual assault and harassment levelled against a Liberal senator. I'm David Lipson, coming to you from Gadigal Land in Sydney.
